screenshot of unworkable table

When loading table in librewriter (3.5.7.2) all I get is a table full of
shading. I cannot see gridlines and cannot manipulate columns/rows to my needs.
writing in the table is invisible. I've tried removing via
tools>options>libreoffice>appearance and uncheck index and table shadings but
to no avail. Hopefully, there is a simple answer to this issue and thanks in
advance
