Reproduced using 4.3.0.3 (aka RC3, 64-bit) on OS X 10.9.4. The same applies to
time fields (inserted from Insert > Fields), and applies to both fixed and
variable fields.
A workaround is to highlight only the inserted field and go to Edit > Fields…
and choose the field type and format.
