            Bug ID: 85729
Summary: improved performance by reducing code size and
                    improving dev tool set
           Product: LibreOffice
           Version: unspecified
          Hardware: x86 (IA32)
                OS: Windows (All)
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: medium
         Component: Libreoffice
          Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
          Reporter: matthias.weis...@gmx.de

30 years ago - in 1984 - the apple macintosh system appeared on the market.
http://www.mac-history.de/die-geschichte-des-apple-macintosh

It used a window operating system, had quite high resolution and provided real
WYSIWYG on the printer. The whole system started from a single diskette drive
of just 400kB or so. The CPU frequency was just 8MHz - no more. RAM storage was
less than 1 Mb. It was very easy to operate compared to the IBM PC !

It was possible even without a hard disc drive. The working performance was
quite good - and much better using a small hard drive.

Since then the computing power really exploded. We now have GHz prozessors,
extremely powerful graphics engines, GBYTE RAM and TERABYTE hard drives.

Unfortunately the performance today sometimes is not so great. I have a Siemens
Fujitsu E-series notebook - not so cheap - running WinXP. Several windows are
open (an old dreamweaver 4, explorer). When I am running LO versions sometimes
the performance is very poor. It can take more than 30 seconds just opening up
an LO window. Sometimes characters typing in are appearing with significant
latency time.

Compared to the old MS office 2000 programs WORD2000 and PPT2000 the LO program
seems to be sluggish. Its not much fun working with it in comparison.

I really would like to see an improvement in performance. I think this could
and should be possible.

Smaller code size should run faster, should start faster, should be easier to
maintain.

30 years ago Apple showed whats possible when a good idea is needed. Again with
the iMac they showed something. I think that also LO could be improved a step
forward - to be smaller, better performing and therefore a real winner.

Productivity is improved if the tools allow a faster work flow.
