I guess that your document is using a variable-pitch font which makes
spaces narrower than other characters (which are of different widths,
anyway).  Try using a fixed-width font for the pasted text--perhaps
Courier, or anything with "mono" in the name.  You may also want to
use a smaller nominal size for the fixed width font.  I think you will
find the results more to your taste.

Each line-end from the plain text file is coming in as a separate
paragraph.  One fix is to select the pasted text and reduce the
interparagraph spacing (menu Format > Paragraph) to, say, zero.

This need not be as tedious as it sounds:  styles are your friend.

to how-to questions.
