As I needed a quick solution I made a new clean database and then it worked. So
it looks like it depends on something coming from the mail merge address
database. Unfortunately my data is kind of confidential so I can't just share
that. If I get some time I might be able to figure out what exactly it did not
like about my initial database which was an Excel import of some sorts.
Let me know if you need any further information or help debugging this issue
which scared the hell out of me initially as I needed to get a mailing
completed quickly.
