As you wrote, it is matter of taste. I like desktop icons, because my start
menu on XP is so large, that it cannot fit in the screen, and I cannot use
shortcuts that are not visible.
Installer asks, if the user wants to install desktop icon. I would not change
the default behaviour, unless there are some serious arguments against it.
