It is a bug it it occurs on a file system where the "." is not compulsory and
prevents files from being opened if they do _not_ contain a "."

This is the case on linux (and as far as I know it is also the case now in
Windows and on OSX under HFS+).  

Basically I cannot see my file because it does not have a "." in it!


PS it isn't tradition - it is an old and obsolete limitation under DOS - it
isn't like you insist on 16 bit real mode executables just because that is how
it was done in the olden days!
