Understood. Assign modified styles rather than direct formatting.

Do not beleive that is the case. If you select a row or a column or the full
sheet and apply a font color change--the cells with direct formatting applied
(differing from the style of the cell) will retain it.

But, you can change the direct formatting of just the color for a specific cell
or group of cells while not changing any of the other direct formatting.
