I just tested it in one of my virtual machines and I can confirm that indeed
the problem doesn't exist in Xubuntu 16.04 with libreoffice from the ppa.

I tried it but the problem persist.

On my computer which is pretty fast (CPU Threads: 8, RAM: 16GB and solid state
hard drive) the problem is easy to reproduce, just start Calc and every
operation that need a redrawing of the window (scrolling, selection, resizing)
slow down the whole system because the Xorg process consumes the 100% of one of
my cores. There is no need to use a large file to see the issue, with a simple
one is enough.

My distro Xubuntu is gtk2, I don't know about gtk3. Xubuntu 14.04 use libcairo
1.13.0~20140204-0ubuntu1.1
