The patch on gerrit addresses the desktop shortcut problem but makes all other
use cases where symlinks are actually meant for fail. This is unacceptable.

Are there any means to distinguish a desktop shortcut from a normal symlink so
the document could be opened differently by following the link in that case?
That would solve all problems.
