LOL, spoke too soon, looks like OSX systems get the raw deal. Just tested on :
Macbook Pro (Retina, 15", end 2013)
2.6 Ghz Intel Core i7 (8 cores)
16 Gb RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048Mb
Time to initial display of template preview : 50s !
