1. The default JRE was not selected in my installation of LO. However, setting
the JRE in tool-options-jave did not correct the problem. The search feature
of LO help always crashed when any attempt was made to use it. The search term
used was not significant, every search filed.
2. Updating to 3.6.1 corrected the problem. So whatever the cause it is either
fixed in 3.6.1 or reinstalling the software corrected whatever underlying
problem existed.
