I am not sure exactly how you tried to paste the table. I followed these
instructions for MS products, but using Libre Office:

In Calc, copy the table rows and data.
In Writer, click where you want the table.
Choose Edit -> Paste Special.
Choose the Calc Object.

This results in the table being imported as an uneditable image... which I
imagine is not useful.

I found a different approach that I believe gives the results you want:

In Calc, copy the table rows and data.
In Writer, click where you want the table.
Choose Edit -> Paste Special.
This time choose Formatted Text.

This results in the table showing up with editable columns, and in a much
easier to read format.

I did this on Version 4.0.1.0+ (Build ID:
e8af168ca227529b752abb9c7aecc42be4a229) on Ubuntu 12.04.
