In order to reproduce the matter in ubuntu 12.04 (not in windows) start an empty spread sheet, fill in the fields as in my example, save it as either .ods or .xlsx file with the Chinese script visible, close and reopen the same file and - in my case - the column with the Chinese script is altered by libre office into type = droid sans instead of type = times new roman. Because of this, all characters have disappeared.
