Thank you for this.

I have traced the trouble to a desktop/system setting in the native
Ubuntu/Unity system.  In particular:

1. Open System Settings... / Mouse and Touchpad
2. Deselect checkbox labelled "Show position of pointer when Control key is
pressed"

The described problem no longer occurs in LibreOffice Writer.
