The assorted "exceptions" and "pitfalls" now make this feel more like trying to fix something that isn't broken - with great potential for breaking it in the process. Personally, I would regularly use the ability to choose the priority column but then again I've "always" double clicked allowing it to reach it's own limit and if I needed greater depth then I'd ctrl+down to the end of that column, assess and adjust the terminal point and just double-click again - or cut and paste to a preselected row limit.
