Repro in a recent 24.8 alpha regarding the described behavior(s).
I don't know whether there are valid reasons for the current behavior (in which
case, it should be maintained). Otherwise, it makes sense for users to be able
to enter in cell's edit mode and just press CSE (with or without additional
adjacent cells also selected when entering edit mode).
