Storing the last edit pos in the document, and then having each and every user who's just consuming the content start at random pages/slides, is the trade-off at hand. Your otherwise valid suggestion is a different beast, please file a separate bug for it (i.e. storing last-edit positions for a number of documents in the _application_ config).
