Looks like 4.4.0.2 has this solaris ld patch already applied. I strongly believe gmake is not using the solaris.mk file. Make equivalent to unxgcc.mk (with gld). NB: use $(READELF) updated in configure.ac and config_host.mk.in perhaps you two could try to agree on which is the right linker to use :)
