Hi. Building on a "normal" VM is not a problem, as you note, but a USB disk depend on the formatting, if you have formatted it with FAT32 instead of NTFS, Cygwin sometimes "forget" the limitation and believes it is NTFS, meaning long names. The fsutil statement forces cygwin to use good old 8.3 names.
