Dear LibrePlanet colleagues, I'm writing from the University of Barcelona about a study that prioritizes free software principles in academic research.
We're investigating how gaming experiences relate to English speaking skills among non-native speakers. Rather than using commercial third-party proprietary software, we've built our study and conversational agent using free software (with the exception of a graphics card firmware and CUDA libraries, this is a current limitation), keeping data under our control and maintaining methodological transparency. This approach shows that, despite some limitations, principled software choices are compatible with serious academic research. We don't need to surrender our data and methods. We're seeking participants aged 18+ who speak English as a second/additional language (any proficiency level) and have any gaming experience. Just 15 minutes, €250 prize pool, IRB approved. Could you help us reach potential participants or suggest contacts? Even if you don't game yourself, you might know colleagues, students, or communities who do. Here's a message you can forward: Research Study - University of Barcelona: Researchers are studying how gaming experiences affect language skills using transparent, privacy-focused methodology. If you're 18+, speak English as a second language (any level), and have any gaming experience, we need just 15 minutes for an online, asynchronous study. Institutional data control. €250 prize pool. IRB approved. Participate: [1]videogames.emmacaputo.com Thanks for supporting research that prioritizes transparency and institutional autonomy.
