David responded to me off the list when I was having mail problems (Hotmail
lost all of my online mail archives!). I'll paste his reply here in case
anyone else might have some thoughts that might be useful. I have until
Tuesday to try to work this out before I'll have to return this modem...

I'm seriously heading that way at this point David. Hotmail ... %$#*&^ (no
comment) ... and My-Deja ... My post to the list came back to me after about
6-8 notes were posted to the list after the point where I had sent in mine.

I have in fact gone that route. I've done many many line tests at this
point on my old modem, my desktop's modem, and this new 3COM megahertz
modem. I consistently get transfer rates of 2.9KBytes/sec to 3.6KBytes/sec
with my other old 3.6k modems. They also always negotiate connection speeds
of 40,000bps

The 3COM never manages a connection speed of more than 24000bps. So I know
that the transfer rate capability of my lines is beyond that which I'm
seeing with the 3COM modem.

Also, as I've noted, there are no settings in my PCIC configuration in
Device Manager under 'PCMCIA Socket' for either an interrupt request or
memory range. This, the 3COM support person said, was really strange, and
that it was a wonder that the modem was working at all. I've thought about
just deleting that PCIC controller entry under PCMCIA Socket in Device
manager, and rebooting to see if Windows will make it right.

Heh :-P I read this in the manual for the 3COM modem. I'll give it a try.

Any other thoughts and suggestions anyone may have would be very much
appreciated. Supposedly I have 5 days (until Tuesday) to be able to return
the modem to Centrix without having to pay the 15% restocking fee.

My apologies for my many odd posts to the list in the process of getting my
online accounts straightened out.
