Subject: Is this why Toshiba abandoned the Libretto?
Check out this PC World news brief...
Toshiba is planning to enter the competitive PDA market this summer by
launching a product in the U.S., European, and Japanese markets, the company
announced Monday.
Details of the new product, which is in the planning stage, are yet to be
decided, says company spokesperson Yumiko Kokubu.
Toshiba is the world's leading notebook computer maker and has taken its
machines down to the small size sub-notebook level but has never made the
jump into the PDA market. When it does, it can expect fierce competition
from companies including Sharp, Casio Computer, Palm, Handspring, and Sony.
Success in the market will mirror Sony, which made the leap from notebooks
to PDAs last year with the launch of its Clie PDA. That machine, based on
Palm's operating system, boasts several multimedia features that were not
available on other machines at launch time, enough for it to carve out a
niche in the market.
A report in the Monday morning edition of a Japanese newspaper says Toshiba
is likely to use Microsoft's PocketPC operating system for its new terminal,
but the spokesperson says the company is currently evaluating a number of
operating systems and has yet to make a decision.
The newspaper also reported that Toshiba is looking to link with Germany's
Siemens in marketing the device in Europe. The two companies formed an
alliance late last year to design and develop next-generation cellular
telephones. Such a move was one of a number of possibilities Toshiba is
currently evaluating, says Kokubu.

Kinda interseting.
