A 'filter'?  Would this also include a brighter light as you describe next?

But wouldn't whatever is going to create more light, also consume more 
power?

Okay!  That makes a lot of sense.  These are the sort of thing I need to 
know before I can really get the wondering out of my head.  Thanks Neil!
