Adam,
no flame intended, but nothing M$ has sold in the last 4 years has been
designed to run on low-end systems. The further past 95B that you go,
the more bloat you pick up. (Actually the same thing could be said for
DOS 3.2 :) I'm quite happy with 98SE kernel and 95 explorer (courtesy
of 98lite!) for everything I can't do in Linux.
Unless I've missed something and they've made their naming even less
intuitive than it already was, the "professional" versions are for
workstations, and the "server" versions are for servers. For NT4 it
meant something like 4 registry entries different, for W2K I believe it
means a good bit more services that you would never want to run on your
libby. I wouldn't consider any of them, but if you felt some desire to
try W2K, I would try the non-server version. With that said, I don't
think the additional bloat (oops I meant functionality) that comes with
the server version necessarily takes any additional RAM or CPU as long
as you don't start the services, but it would definitely take up
valuable HD space. With W2K's amazingly large footprint already, I
would try to keep it as lean as possible.
Cheers,
David
