Doug,

Remove the back of the 50 completely. In the back there's an insulating 
layer of plastic (probably), some soft white or blue spacers, and some 
transparent hard spacers. IIRC the black shim is between the pcb and the 
disc - you'll need this bit.

Lose the hard spacers, and if things are *still* tight after you put it back 
together, lose the white/blue ones. But it will never be quite as easy to 
fit a 9.5mm drive - the space is really intended for 8.45mm - though once 
it's in, without the spacers, there should be no stress on the board.

It's the memory chip connections on the motherboard above the disc which are 
at risk, and at the other end, being rough with pcmcia cards can damage the 
video ram connections leading to odd effects on the screen.
