Michael,

My old 70CT did this from time to time. It was very annoying until I
found out that 1) by going into the AccuPoint setup in the Control Panel
it would correct the drift (I had the Toshiba driver installed, don't
know if it will do this for the IBM one). Because of this, I kept a
Shortcut to the mouse driver on the desktop and clicked it whenever this
happened. 2) I later learned that changing the thumb cap caused this to
go away. I think the old cap was putting a little pressure on the sensor
thus causing the mouse pointer to move. I believe going into the driver
calibrated for this.
