There are many things needed to get a HDD working that are seldom
considered:
BIOS needs to see the drive properly
Bootable partition set ACTIVE
Formatted
SYS installed.
You may want to use FDISK/MBR to restore the Master Boot Record. Another
trick usually forgotten about.
And the FDISK you use to set the partitions should be from the exact same
version of the MS OS you are trying. I have seen times where a HDD will be
FDISK'ed with DOS 6.22 and if booted into DOS7 ( Win95 ) the partitions are
all screwey. Yes, that's the technical term.
In almost any Libretto the hot ticket is to FDISK the drive IN the Libretto
using a bootable floppy. Because BIOS lies to FDISK about the size of the
disk, the hibernation area is excluded from the file system. Then, copy the
.CABs to the HDD and run setup from there.
I would not trust a Win9x installation done in another machine. Many
hardware items to remove and install when in the actual Libretto.
