Umm ... why would a laptop normally need to kill the lamp WITHOUT killing the LCD 
itself? As far as I'm aware, newer laptops (ie. newer than 6 or 7 years) only have 4 
or 5 brightnesses for the bulb (so it can tweak the circuitry for best efficiency at 
those levels, its harder to tweak it if the settings are incremental) with the lowest 
one being the bulb off. Under normal situations, this will also result in the LCD 
being turned off (no reason keeping it on otherwise) Therefore it wouldn't surprise me 
at all if the was no separate call to do that. Blanking the LCD itself without turning 
the bulb off is easy - just display a screen of 'black'.
