Subject: Re: [LIB] New battery vs new toshiba :> Portege ?

I bought a new Portege 3490CT to (partly) replace my 50CT, as previously
posted.
That was about 3 weeks ago, and to date I am very pleased with it.
If the new Libretto L1 was available in the UK I would have considered it,
however as I wanted to do some video editing I would question using the
cruseo processor over the Portege PIII 700Hz processor.
The Portege is light(3lb), so you can happily rest it on your lap, and pick
it up with one hand with the lid open, just like the lib.
Compared to the equivalent Sony Vaio Z600LEK, the Portege has a bigger hard
drive (20 compared to 15), lighter, and has an IR port. The Sony has a
firewire port and memory stick slot which the Portege does not, however as I
have a firewire PC card, and no memory stick devices this was not important.
The Portege does not come with a CD rom drive, only a USB floppy drive.
However my Freecom traveller CD-RW drive is compatable with the optional
Toshiba external CD drive and will boot from the Toshiba recovery CD.
As per my earlier posting, a bought the Portege from PCWorld for just less
than 1200 pounds (manager special offer !), the Sony is still over 1700
pounds.
Last week I bought an external DVD drive from PCWorld for only 90 pounds,
and it plays DVD movies perfectly !
I believe PCWorld are clearing a lot of stock, so bargains are possible if
you look out for them.
Mike.
