I found something interesting. Testing both my HP CD-R/RW and EXP CD-ROM drives with MusicMatch 4.0 again, I found that MM will ONLY extract audio from CDs on these drives by setting its 'CD Recording Mode' to 'Analog' instead of 'Digital'! Go figure. (Actually, this is why I went out to get new DAE software a few months back.) So this would seem to mea that the digital to analog conversion is done in the drive, and sent through pcmcia connection, wouldn't it? MM wouldn't take a digital bitstream, and convert it to analog to write MP3s, would it? So if in fact MM is creating an analog audio signal and piping it through the PCMCIA connection, I'm guessing that it's not done in a manner that was common back when music CD reading software was originally written. I found that testing the drives for DAE with the Nero CD Speed utility, the HP passed, but the EXP did not. And I can get DAE from the HP CD-R/RW with Nero, Easy CD DA Converter, and WinDAC32. Nero of course won't recognize the EXP CD-ROM, but both Easy CD DA Converter, and WinDAC32 see the CD in it. However WinDAC32 can't extract the tracks to MP3s, while Easy CD DA Converter can. I'm wondering if Easy CD DA Converter is able to automatically sense the need to pull the audio off the EXP via an analog feed that MM requires, however that might work. Curious.
