Subject: RE: [LIB] Matt's new toy ;-)

Thanks for all the suggestions folks. After some testing, I've decided to go ahead and keep the L100, as I can't find anything serious problems with it. Plus it's just so darned cute, fast and fun that I can't bear to let it go at this point! :-D

The guy who sold it to me has been very forth coming about responding to my questions. Seems he inherited the system as is, and has been using it for some time now himself. It may be that the person he bought it from did some repairs, or had some repairs done to it, as it all seems to be working properly.

Lid:

The lid is my only real concern. So I'm going to take Nick's advise and open it up and have a look at the hinge. I don't know how well I described how much lid movement I have before I experience resistance. But measuring it, I find I get a total of 3/4 inch of loose travel before I experience the normal resistance I have in the L70. The L70 only has about 1/4 inch. If there's a threat to the LCD, I want to get that sorted out.

Mouse:

I took Pres's suggestion of swapping the L70 cover to the L100 first, as it was easiest. It made a lot of difference, and the L70 seems to work well with the cap from the L70. I should order a bunch of the 50/70 caps before they disappear. I'll try the card stock trick that Lee and George suggested. Maybe it'll loosen up a bit more.

Does anyone know if there's a fix for the stiff buttons?

EPR:

Don't know what I was doing wrong, but it seems to be working fine now. I think I'm going to keep the W98SE installation. I think David thought it was a residual from the last owner. But he did a fresh installation. During the first few boots it searched the C:\Win98 directory he'd set up (nice of him), and loaded a few drivers for ports an such. I guess he didn't have the system on the EPR when he re-loaded Windows. But the EPR seems to working fine there now.

Charger cord:

From what Lee said, I guess Toshiba didn't bother to make a cord to connect
the charger to the 100CT. Makes sense, as the 50/70s needed to have power to charge while running, and the 100/110s already do that internally.

Keyboard screw:

I guess the majority vote here is that it never existed. I just think I may pass on Pres's modification process. ;-P

Screen brightness:

This is the really screwy one! I just had an experience that makes be wish I'd paid more attention in class learning about anatomy. For the fun of it, I put my old 33.3 modem in the L70, and went online with the 100 on one line, and the 70 on the other. Try doing that with AOL (not surprising I see few if any listers using AOL).

What was weird is that while it was going online, and I was working with the 100, I noticed that the 100 was brighter that the 70 today!! How could that be? Then I started working on the 70 for 5-10 minutes, and turned back to the 100. And all of a sudden the 100 looked dimmer than the 70! It must have something to do with retina retention, or something else to do with the inner workings of my eyes.

I notice that the screen colors between the 70 and 100 are very different. The white on the 70 has a yellowish tinge. The greys on the 100 are lighter. And the blues on the 70 are a dark navy blue, whereas the blues on the 100 are a much brighter 'sky blue'.

100 drivers:

I guess this guy did get the right video drivers. I saw 'NeoMagic' amongst the names for the driver files he left in a folder, and thought he must have used non-toshiba drivers. But the Toshiba wesbite confirms what Lee pointed out, that the 100 video drivers are in fact NeoMagic based.

I'm assuming he got the right sound drivers. In device manager it's reported as: 'YAMAHA OPL3-SAx WDM driver'. That's different from the 70, but they are two different drivers for some reason.

There's no Toshiba power saving driver. I guess I can download that and set it up.

Outlook Express:

oh, great! another email spam/virus forwarder! ;) Nothing like using one of
the most insecure email programs available to help pass on the
viruses/spam/etc. to the next guy, right? ;)
Yeah... Ain't in great!!

Actually this is all just a practice run for getting familiar with the 100 and the Win98SE OS that I've been thinking of putting on the 70. The HD in the 100 is only a 3.2GB HDD, and I have a 6.2GB HD in the 50. So I'll probably move the 20GB HD from the 70 to the 100, the 6.2GB from the 50 to the 70, and put this 3.2GB on the 50.

Then at some point I'd really like to set up the W2K OS on the 100, and pray for less crashing.

Now I'll pop the lid cover off and check the hinges as Nick suggested.

Thanks again for all the feedback folks.

Ciao for now,

Matt
