Subject: Replacing L110 RTC battery

I thought I'd post this to the list to have you folks check me here. I was contacted off-list on just how to get an RTC battery into its proper place on a L100. Someone had laid the RTC battery oon its side in the area for the 32MB RAM upgrade:

no time date and winamp didn't seem to play for some reason
there seem's to be no compartment for the battery to fit in
it is all a solid sheet of metal under it, i may take it apart some more or maybe send you a pic
Scotty,

Okay... I lifted the keyboard on my L100, and see the problem. On the L1xx models (maybe others too), you have to disassemble quite a bit to get to the RTC (BIOS) battery compartment.

If you want to attempt it, I'd suggest you go here ftp://93.conics.net/upload/ and double-click on the l100mm.zip file to download the L1xx manual. On page 152, on section 4-1 you will see a chart that shows what all you need to remove to get to the RTC battery compartment. Basically all procedures in boxes above the rectangular box labeled '4.6 RTC Battery' have to be done first. That means separating the top and bottom case halves. After a few pages of advice on the process, the instructions begin on page 156, section 4-5.

Briefly the procedure goes like this. See the manual for more details and illustrations:

1. Remove main battery pack and any PC cards in the PCMCIA slots.
2. Pull the 2 screws from the bottom of the case that hold in the HDD and pull the HDD.
3. Remove the expansion memory.
4. Disconnect and pull the keyboard.
5. Lift the metal cover over the MB, disconnect display cable plug, and pull the RTC battery cable from its groove (your battery is alredy out, so skip that)
6. Flip the case and remove remaining 5 case screws.
7. Flip case back and disconnect microphone cable plug from the MB by the left hinge. (This was hard for me. Be careful. It took me some time to pull hard and carefully)
8. Lift the top display half of the case off the bottom half.

At this point you should be able to put the RTC battery in it's proper slot. Then reverse the procedure to assemble.

Let me know if you have any problems.

Matt
