The drives they tested were the highest capacity drives in each model line.
So, if there's a 20 & 40GB model, then it's the 40GB model they tested.

Okay...

In any
case, having an extra head in the drive isn't going to matter at all. they've
already got a platter or two inside, and that's pretty much the only spinning
part in there that'll cause the motor to run hard and generate heat. Also, the
temperatures will remain pretty much the same across the same model line I
suspect due to the similarities in all other parts.

Okay.. then it's likely that the Hitachi DK23FB-40 08K1472 with 1 platter and 2 heads is likely to have pretty much the same specs as the DK23FB-40 07N9482 with 2 platters and 4 heads, si?

Then my next ponderment would be... why should Hitachi go from the 1 platter and 2 head model to the 2 platter and 4 head model, if not for increasing performance? Wouldn't having twice the surface area for the same amount of storage, say 40GB, and 4 heads instead of 2, enable the 2 platter/4 head model to read and write a bit faster?

In any case, you may want to just try out a HD and see if it goes. Buy from
a place with a return policy, or simply drop it into an external case (eg.
those coolmax cases at pccmicrostore/shop.com I noted earlier with those
aluminum external 2.5" cases). Anyways, a lot of us are happy .

Hey, there you go!

   Poll time!!
Who's running what inside their Librettos just fine?

L110 with 20GB Hitachi here - no problems for 2+ years.

Heh... Well, my L50 w/??? HDD hasn't had any problems at all recently... but then the poor forlorn thing has been sitting on the shelf, not given much attention as of late.

L70 is still my main work horse with the noisey Fujitsu 20GB that MP3s start clicking on after 5-10 minutes or so. But I did just install Win98SE a while back, and I really doon't know if I've checked that clicking since. I do want to get one of those high fidelity Layla PCMCIA sound playback cards for about $100 at some point. Anyone familiar with those?

The L100 needs clocking back from 266 to 233, and W2K installed instead of WinXP I think. The Toshiba 6GB HDD in it has never had any problems.

Where's that bargain on a L110 to complete my collection?? ;-P

Matt
