Subject: New Sony Type U ultra-mini-notebook! 1lbs/0.5kg!

1Ghz P-M processor, 20GB HD, 256MB (512MB max), WiFi, 5" 800x600 touch-screen
LCD
External, detachable keyboard & DVD drive.

---

Knowing how well the usual XP tablet edition works with pen input, I'd think it
would be okay to run the U50 w/o a keyboard on-the-go. Still, wish they'd
simply make it a foldable keyboard cover instead.

Nevertheless, we now know just how far they can drop the weight of a new
'Libretto' if Toshiba was making one today -- 1lbs or 0.5kg for the entire
unit. Very impressive, and half the weight of the older Librettos.

Still, expect lots of squinting as the screen size drops to 5" (smaller than
the smallest Libretto screens), and they could easily have dropped in a much
larger wide-screen instead by moving the buttons to the sides.

----

Current, far too expensive at 170,000 - 200,000 Yen ($1700 - $2000 USD), and
even more so if you use it for what it is good for --- a portable video iPod --
despite the very small 20GB HD.

As always, this is just the first taste of what's to come, so expect more
powerful 40-80GB models with larger screens in the next couple of generations
as Sony refines the idea.
