Sounds like you could use Ghost.

You'd need to check that drivers exist for you're PCMCIA FireWire card but
on a Firewire enabled desktop you can use a Ghost boot disk to boot the
machine and copy the entire hard drive to an image on a firewire disk. Then,
if you ever need to re-install, you can boot with the disk again and restore
it exactly as it was... no need for disk swapping.
