Well, long ago, they could have simply extended IR to longer ranges and speeds,
and that would have mostly been the end of that for local wireless devices
perhaps.....

Same with the wired connections - once firewire was released, no point at all
for USB 1 or 2 at all.

but as usual, nobody bothers to think too far ahead in the computer world,
which is why we've got parallel, serial, usb, FW, wifi, ir, etc, etc.

given the range of devices people have from the past, more is better.  For new
buyers, they could get away with just the basics, but sadly, peripheral makers
are always trying something old/new to connect to the PC, so that makes people
go nuts when they discover their PC can't handle whatever connector format is
being asked for because it's not on the PC.
