Well, long ago, they could have simply extended IR to longer ranges and speeds, and that would have mostly been the end of that for local wireless devices perhaps..... Same with the wired connections - once firewire was released, no point at all for USB 1 or 2 at all. but as usual, nobody bothers to think too far ahead in the computer world, which is why we've got parallel, serial, usb, FW, wifi, ir, etc, etc. given the range of devices people have from the past, more is better.
