Finally resolved it after deleting the motherboard-supplied drivers and allowing W2K/SP4 to set up USB, per Microsoft's recommendation (not that I'm a big MS fan ;-) I'd be interested in learning of others' experiences, as my research on the web largely agreed with the MS diagnosis.
