Saw the various thread on the SoundBlaster Audigy ZS 2 PCMCIA card popping problem, and it looks like there may be no solution if the Libretto can't work with this card w/o further hardware tweaks. Here's some of the problems and ways around the Audigy popping problem - wonder if we'll ever find the 'perfect' solution for the TDK? ------- "I just read this thread and I thought I would share my experience. I installed a Notebook Audigy 2 on my Sager 9860 (TI 1410 PCMCIA chip) with no problems. However, I installed another Audigy 2 Notebook on my sister's Dell 8200 (TI 1450 PCMCIA chip) and it had the popping sounds issue. I enabled the bass boost (in the Creative speaker settings) on her machine and the popping sounds issue went away. Prior to selecting Bass Boost there was popping before each sound no matter what the sound volume level was set at. Turning the Bass Boost on and off was blind luck. This is just another data point and it is very repeatable: turn the Bass Boost off and the popping returns, turn on Bass Boost back on and the popping stops. This behavior occurred at all sound level settings. All of the above is with the newer Creative drivers." "I've previously messed about with Echo Digital notebook soundcards. There is a known issue with their PCMCIA soundcards that involves the ENE CB710 CardBus controller which is fixed by a patch that they issue you. Apparently the latency and/or throughput of this controller is such that it causes problems with PCMCIA sound cards - I don't have the utility anymore (or an Echo sound card) but I'm trying to get a copy to see if perhaps it would be applicable to the TERRIBLE sound quality on this card." http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=pcmciasb&message.id=30 http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?s=e7bd8e90fe60c0c13b8cd42b322742e9&t=54735&page=2&pp=15 Other cards also have a popping problem, but the solutions won't apply to this card. "Some recent Creative Labs sound card drivers feature a "turbo mode", which is usually enabled by default. Disabling "turbo mode" will stop the sound cards from making "hissing" or "crackling" noises, but Creative Labs does not provide a way to disable it. This patch program will disable "turbo mode" and thus stop the cards from making noises." ""PCI Latency" patch for VIA chipsets This is a Windows driver that will patch motherboards that have VIA chipsets. It is intended to solve many problems, including these: * Files copied from one IDE hard disk drive to another are corrupted * The computer stops ("freezes", "hangs", "locks up") when playing sounds, especially to a Creative SoundBlaster LIVE! card * The computer stops when copying to or from an IDE DVD, CDROM, or CDRW drive * Sounds played by a Creative Labs sound card are distorted" "I've been working with the Audigy Notebook for months now and was originally dealing with a lot of pops, clicks, and static in game audio. Tweaking PCI Latency of the cardbus controller and Audigy PC Card helped in some cases. However, recently I've discovered that on a fresh install of XP and all the latest drivers for the Audigy Note, that switching from ACPI Uniprocessor PC to Advanced Configuration and Power Interface PC solved the glitching completely. This disables APIC (among other things I imagine.) What's interesting about this is that on my desktop PC, which uses a nForce 2 chipset and a Audigy 2 ZS PCI, disabling APIC in the BIOS also solves audio problems. On there though the problems are a bit different. Typing will cause audio to literally slow down and make the system sort of stutter overall. As I said this option can almost always be disabled on desktop BIOS's (especially nForce based), but laptop users never have that level of control in the BIOS." adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __________________________________ Discover Yahoo!
