That strange behaviour usually happens when the battery chemistry has deteriorated over the course of several years. You don't have to use the battery - it's simply a matter of time. The chemistry in the battery will decay over time, and result in shorter battery runtimes. Also, older battery level indication circuitry are not as advanced as the latest used in modern notebooks.
