So you use gcc 4.7.1. I found the following entry in its NEWS file:

     * Avoid polluting the global namespace and do not include <unistd.h>.

I haven't installed gcc 4.7 (I use gcc 4.6.3 in Ubuntu 12.04), but I looked at some of the header files of its libstdc++ standard library. Probably a lot of stuff that the header files cxxxxx (e.g. cstddef, cctype, cstring) previously put in both namesapce std and in the global namespace is now put only in namespace std.

This is a very reasonable change between gcc 4.6 and 4.7 that will break the builds of several modules, not just libsigc++. Glibmm and gtkmm are affected, and probably other modules as well.
