I had thought my ~/old-autotools/bin had 2.61 installed, but it turns out that it was 2.62 all along, which is why I haven't experienced any failures in my tests. Also, I don't think it is worth worrying about 2.61 compatibility, since getopt.m4sh is only needed when bootstrapping, which requires newer autotools anyway. > I've pushed the patch below to fix this failure now.
