libtool would be more useful if it were not so indignant in
the face of non-portable functionality.  If it works on the
user's host platform of interest, libtool should permit it
(unless some technical reason prevents it).  

Remember, people don't just use libtool because it may work the
same way for all hosts.  They may use it because it works well
to abstract shared library creation for some interesting subset
of the hosts.  By being too pedantic, such potential libtool
users are alienated unnecessarily.
