That bug should be fixed in GNU m4 1.4.2, available here: ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/m4/m4-1.4.2.tar.gz (I write "should be" because I couldn't reproduce the problem on my Solaris 8 box with m4 1.4.1. GNU m4 1.4 has some very subtle bugs that are much harder to debug: they cause Autoconf to silently produce incorrect results, and I've run into this problem several times in practice.
