I considered that about 2 seconds after I hit the send button. I hadn't
regenerated the libtool that is
copied over, and still had the old one at the root of my build.

The most likely cause is that your libtool-related files are not all 
from the same release.  Try using 'libtoolize --force' and then 
'aclocal'.
