Thanks for the report.
It does seem like an error to me too. In branch-1-5 it is ' ', and in HEAD
'$convenience', would seem like '$convenience' might be correct.
Can you check, please, if setting whole_archive_flag_spec='$convenience'
also fixes your bug?
