This lead me down the right track. I invoked autoreconf with --debug ("--verbose --verbose" would work too) which in turn invokes aclocal with the --verbose option. The output indicated that there was a libtool.m4 in ./gnulib/m4. I must have added this inadvertently to svn when integrating gnulib. Once I removed that everything worked. Thank you very much.
