Update.
Really not sure why, but I started a new session and now the compile is working.
So perhaps it was something with my session. I'll probably never know exactly 
but I am just glad its working now.

I can't tell where you obtained this libtool from.  Are you using the official 
libtool source package from ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/libtool or are you using 
something you happened to find bundled (and quite possibly botched) in some 
other package's tarball?
