Thank you Josef, Jari, and Ethan for the help. I found the link to the
linux.com article quite useful and successfully used the method to get
back the files.
I was tempted to try the method suggested by Josef but manually copying
the files was the safest method given my skill level. I might try it
later, but will need to free up some disk space somewhere first and will
seed a bit more before trying that.
One thing that I did not understand with Josef's method was whether I
needed to do anything more than remove the limits on the main file,
check for sufficent space and then type in rtorrent [torrent] to transfer
the files over without using the network?

I've done this many times myself. Jari and others are correct: Don't
mess with the open torrent in rtorrent. You can use lsof to identify
the open file descriptor (fd) and recover it from /proc/<pid>/<fd>.
