be difficult to convince all of them to change to BSD license from
the current LGPL 2.1 license.

If you use FreeBSD, it has libusb-1.0 implementation which is
compatible with libusb-1.0 API and it is under BSD license.

There is also a new libusby project which tries to implement
libusb-1.0 API (slightly modified) with a more liberal license
(Boost Software License, which is similar to BSD license).

So you may want to take a look at libusby if you want.
I have not tried it myself and I doubt it will gain much
popularity as libusb-1.0/libusbx.
